About this day

Why I like this one

Hue was the capital of Vietnam for a century and a half, and it feels nothing like Da Nang — slower, more formal, and a little melancholy. The Nguyen emperors built a walled city here, ruled from it, and were buried in extraordinary tombs in the hills around it.

We drive up over the Hai Van Pass in the morning so the journey is part of the day rather than something to endure, and come back through the tunnel when everyone is tired.

This is a full day with a lot of walking. If you would rather see two places properly than four in a hurry, say so and that is what we will do.

Highlights

  • The Imperial Citadel and the ruins of the Forbidden Purple City
  • Thien Mu Pagoda, and the car that carried Thich Quang Duc to Saigon in 1963
  • The glass and porcelain mosaic inside Khai Dinh's tomb
  • Hue royal cooking — a cuisine of its own, built for an emperor

The plan, hour by hour

This is how the day usually runs. Nothing is fixed — if you want longer somewhere, or you'd rather skip a stop entirely, just say so on the day.

  1. 07:00

    Hotel pick-up

Early start, because we are going the beautiful way rather than the fast way.

  2. 08:00

    Over the Hai Van Pass

Twenty-one kilometres of coastal switchbacks with stops at the summit gate and the Lang Co viewpoint. About two and a half hours to Hue this way, and worth every minute.

  3. 09:30

    The Imperial Citadel

200,000₫ for adults, 40,000₫ for children, open 07:00–18:00. In through the Ngo Mon gate, past the nine holy cannons, into Thai Hoa palace where thirteen emperors were crowned — and then out into the Forbidden Purple City, flattened in the fighting of 1968 and slowly, carefully being rebuilt.

  4. 11:30

    Thien Mu Pagoda

Free, and the most photographed building in Hue: the seven-storey Phuoc Duyen tower above the Perfume River. Behind it, in a garage, sits the pale blue Austin that drove the monk Thich Quang Duc to Saigon in 1963.

  5. 12:30

    Lunch, Hue style

The royal kitchen made small, elaborate dishes for a bored emperor and the city still eats that way — banh beo, banh loc, banh khoai — plus bun bo Hue, the spicy beef noodle soup this city gave the country.

  6. 14:00

    Tomb of Khai Dinh

150,000₫. Blackened concrete and dragons on the outside, and then you step in and the entire interior is glass and porcelain mosaic, eleven years in the making. It is the strangest and best thing in Hue.

  7. 15:30

Perfume River or Dong Ba market

A dragon boat on the river if you have the energy, or the market if you would rather shop. Or coffee, honestly, by this point.

  8. 16:30

    Drive back through the tunnel

The fast way home, about two hours, with everybody asleep by Lang Co.

  9. 18:30

    Drop-off

Back at your hotel in Da Nang.
